Edward Behan 1875 Gingerale Company
History:
Born:Feb.1,1847 Died:Oct.5,1925
Born in Fitzroy Township in 1847 which was a part of Pembroke, Ont.
When a young man he engaged for some years in lumbering. In 1873 he went over to Dawson Trial in Winnipeg, then Fort Garry and spent two years in the new west.
Returning in 1875, he settled in Pembroke, Ont. For a couple years he conducted a grocery and liquor store and at the same time manufacturing gingerale. Afterwards for several years he conducted a hotel. Between 1895 to 1899 Edward Behan's house burnt down which he operated a small gingerale business in his backyard in a shed.
His house was located on Renfrew Street. Subsequently he embarked on a larger scale in the manufacture of soft drinks and for many years supplied these to a large section of the county. The enterprise expanding steadily until falling health forced Mr. Behan to retire and dispose of the business to a Mr. A. Allard. Edward Behan engaged in municipal contracting and carried out a number of public work in Pembroke. Including waterworks and sewage and the laying of the intake pipes into the lake. Edward Behan had a keen sense of the responsibilities of citizenship and was ever ready to assume and discharge its obligations. For about twenty years he was connected with the local fire department and for seven years was its chief. He was a Seperate School Trustee from 1894-1902 and represented centre ward in the town coucil in 1903-1904. In 1908 and 1909 he was Deputy-Reeve and during two trying war years 1916-1917 served the town creditably as Mayor.
From its inception he was an active member of the Board of Trade and several years was a councillor of that organization. Every worthy local cause found in him a keen and ardent supporter and his enthusiasm and organizing ability were many times in large measure responsible for the success of various undertakings. He was also keenly interested in sports and athletics and was ever ready to give assistance to local clubs, while as long as he was physically able he attended baseball, hockey and other games. Until advancing years prevented him too, he was an enthusiastic curler and was numbered among the best local exponents of the game.
Mr. Behan was Roman Catholic in religion and during all the term of his residence here was a faithful and active member of the Cathedral congregation. In politics he never wavered in his adherence to Liberal principle, but both in religion and politics he was broadminded and tolerated towards the views of others and ready always to accord his neighbor the right which he himself claimed and exercised in maintaining and expressing his own views and opinions. Gifted with a pleasing personality, a ready Irish wit, cheery optimism and an alway wholesome, hopeful outlook on things generally, he was a genial companion and few men in North Renfrew enjoyed more friendship. Well informed and keeping himself to current affairs, he was an entertaining conversationalist and in his genuine warm hearted hospitality was ever the portion of friends or stranger, he loved the company of kindred spirits and enjoyed a discussion of the question of the day.
I have found a 30 oz. green gingerale bottle that has a black hairline that runs from the top to the bottom on the one side. I believe it to be a flaw from when the bottle was manufactured, trade mark. I found this bottle buried in the backyard from an old farm house. Recently the farm house was torn down here in Pembroke, Ont. The date of this bottle is unknown but I'm guessing 1940 to 1960. If intersted or if you have any information on this bottle I would like to here from you.
This bottle is in mint shape and very clean and on the bottom of the bottle reads:
CHARLES GURD CO. LTD.

VITALITY BOTTLE 1930
PETAWAWA, ONTARIO
E. GIESEBRECHT
Eugene Giesebrecht is known as one of Petawawa's pioneer entrepreneurs. In 1910, he opened a store and restaurant in the fledgling village of Petawawa. His business grew into the first general store and post office, where he manufactured ice cream, soft drinks and cement blocks.
In 1934, he became one of the first Pepsi-Cola franchisees in Canada. There are very few bottles around.
E. Giesebrecht would have liked to keep the design of this bottle. But quicker to do these bottles by machine and make the lettering into the bottle in block letters.
This bottle is green. On both sides of this bottle reads in capital letters:
A PURE SPRING
under that it reads:
BEVERAGE
7 ounce bottle
On the bottom of the bottle it reads:
PROPERTY OF THE PURE SPRING CO. LTD. OTTAWA
Has a triangle with the letter "C" inside.
Underneath the triangle has the number:
2
Height of bottle:
8 1/4 inches
This bottle is in good shape and has very little scratches.
I have found an old bottle that looks like a spring bottle or soda beverage of some sort. I'm guessing the bottle dates back to 1900-1920. The bottle is clear with lots of bubbles with light greenish- blue tinge, there are no markings on the bottom of this bottle.
Height of bottle:
9 inches
The neck of the bottle has a slight little slant. In capital letters on the side of the bottle it reads:
De Leon
Unerneath the name it reads:
Florida Water.
I'm still looking for a correct date for this bottle. If you have any information I would like to hear from you.
